Everyone generally likes to get out and enjoy the sunshine in the summer. That includes many different types of motorists. While many types of vehicles, like cars, recreational vehicles and trucks take up a lot of space on the roads, it’s important to remember that smaller vehicles share the road as well.

Motorcycles follow all of the same rules and laws other vehicles abide by when behind the wheel. However, both motorcyclists and other drivers may need reminders about how to optimize their safety considering the vehicles are different sizes.

As laid out by the British Columbia Insurance Company, there are some helpful tips that can help reduce the likelihood of an accident. One of the important tips they include is to make sure that motorcyclists watch other drivers for cues on what they going to do. The site says to never assume that other drivers have seen you.

This tip works both ways. It’s important for drivers to also make sure they watch motorcyclists for their cues. Lane changes, a reduction in speed, going around curves – both cars play a role in making sure each one practices safe driving techniques around the other.

This is especially true when it comes to changing lanes or going around vehicles. Some drivers may think they don’t need to give motorcyclists as much room as other cars because they are smaller, and vice versa. It’s important that you leave enough room between all vehicles to ensure a safe manoeuvre between lanes. Always check your blind spots to make sure you are clear – both as a driver and a motorcyclist – before you make any sudden movements.

If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, it’s best that you get in touch with a personal injury firm with experience in this type of collision. The law firm will be able to help you identify what accident benefits you can claim, and how to negotiate with ICBC for compensation.
